Planit welcomes Simon Kenney as a Landscape Architect. Simon has relocated back to the UK after living in San Francisco for eight years and prior to that, Malaysia for four years. He brings to the company a wealth of experience as prior to becoming a Landscape Architect, Simon was a Civil Engineer for 17 years working for MPA Design, Adrienne Wong Associates and SWA Group Landscape Architects (San Francisco) to name but a few! Simon’s interview was concluded on the Llandegla Forest mountain bike route where he demonstrated that he is prepared to go the extra distance.
After months of negotiation, Planit has been appointed by Laing O’Rouke and Balfour Beatty as co-Landscape Architects to deliver the Manchester Building Schools for the Future programme. Working alongside architects Ellis Williams and Aedas, we will join Plincke Landscape in the challenge of delivering six City Academies and over a dozen new schools over the next four years.
Detailed Planning Approval has been granted for the redevelopment of the former United Utilities office site on Hathersage Road, Fallowfield. With buildings designed by Hodder Associates, the site is significant as it wraps around the Victoria Baths complex, winner of the first series of the BBC’s Restoration. The public realm will flow around the residential blocks in a series of undulating mounds and form an organic foil for the clean and crisp lines of the new buildings
In order to increase our knowledge of high-density housing and the European approach to designing play and skate parks, Planit’s Urban Design team (and our regular collaborator Dave Gilkes from DK-Architects) visited the Riem Park district of Munich this week. Masterminded by Anna Marohn, one of our three German Landscape Architects, we visited numerous projects including the site of the former Garden Festival. Keep your eyes on our ‘Scrapbook’ for images of what we saw.
On the back of our successes in Stoke and Kirklees, Planit have been appointed with GVA Grimley to masterplan the Barrow Island site for English Partnerships. Lying on the edge of the town within Morecambe Bay, Barrow Island is famous as being the home to BAE System’s deep-water submarine docks and is a key strategic regeneration area for the Local Authority and the West Lakes Renaissance.
They said it couldn’t be done, but on Wednesday this week a detailed Planning Application (filling a FedEx van!) was lodged at Liverpool City Council for the new HKS designed Anfield Stadium. The breathtaking building and public realm, to be set within Stanley Park, has been designed by HKS in collaboration with Planit and is the result of four months of trans-Atlantic design charettes! If you want to see CGI images of the Stadium, visit the Projects section of this site.
It has taken five years to see the project through from inception through to completion, but ASK Development’s Leopold Square redevelopment opened this week – complete with a new public square designed Planit. The opening party was a grand affair and the stilt walkers made good use of the new space! Go to the Project Profile and you will see some great photos of the big day.
After seven years with Planit, we are sorry to see the departure of our Associate Director, Andy Vaughan as he has (finally!) married his long term sweetheart Naomi and will be off to pastures new…. in Japan!! Their long-term relationship has quite rightly won through and we wish Andy and the new Mrs Vaughan (or not in the case of Mrs Ishihara!) all the best for the future and their life together in Tokyo.
Andy has been a fantastic asset to Planit, in particular spearheading the development of our expertise in Tall Buildings Assessment (with Chris Bamford at Virtual Planit) and playing a vital role in obtaining approval for a number of significant projects including the new Salford Reds stadium on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal.
