Copenhagen to Oslo – Day 1
I had only met Mark Dransfield once – at the retirement dinner of Manchester City Council’s inimitable leader Sir Howard Bernstein – before signing up to do this year’s leg of the Dransfield Foundation’s ride around Europe. I was warned by a mutual friend as to his persuasive character and charm. I should have taken heed!
Over the course of the last decade, Dransfield Properties from Sheffield have been circumnavigating Europe and this year the stage runs from Copenhagen to Oslo.
2017 is the 10th anniversary of the charity bike ride and the hope is to achieve an overall target of raising £50,000. Over the decade nearly £500,000 has been raised for many worthy causes, all centred around helping children. More stats tomorrow!
The charities we are raising money for are: –
Action Against Cancer – this is one of the smaller cancer research charities in the UK, but a hugely important one;
The Dransfield Foundation – this is Dransfield Properties’ own charitable foundation. It was set up to support smaller groups and charities which are aimed at helping children who suffer terminal or life limiting conditions and illnesses, or who have been disadvantaged by their circumstances in life.
Day one saw the six, unfamiliar riders tackling the 70 miles from Copenhagen to a sleepy rural town on the Baltic coast of Sweden.
The weather was much the same as home – rain and wind – but the quality of the architecture, coupled with the near flat terrain made going good. A short ferry crossing from Denmark to Sweden, then a lunch stop inspecting exemplary shared streets in Angelholm got us ready for the final (and only) hill of the day, then rolling in to the rural hotel in Laholm complete with a much needed spa!
Although only six riders this year, the ambition remains unwavering and with 75 flat miles again today, it only postpones the inevitable hills of southern Norway later in the week.
Many of our clients and regular sponsors have already been chased up, but if the work of these charities impresses you, then please feel free to sponsor us at: Virgin Money Giving – Team Dransfield
