A hidden space at the heart of The Co-operative Group’s expansive estate has been transformed into a vibrant new city square at the heart of Manchester, along with the streets that connect it to the city’s core.
Opening up the listed estate reinforces wider routes across the city centre whilst drawing people to gather and dwell within animated streetscapes and new destination spaces.
Designs build on the character infused by the surrounding historic architecture whilst introducing bespoke granite and cast bronze street furniture to create a unique artisan identity. Basements of the buildings flanking the square are revealed to create new opportunities for shops, cafes and restaurants to activate this mixed-use urban neighbourhood. A resilient central flexible events space, named Sadler’s Yard, responds to changing activity patterns and surrounding uses, bringing culture and entertainment back to the core of the NOMA masterplan.
