Public Consultation opens for Gould Street, Manchester

Public consultation has opened this week for the former Gould Street Gasworks site in Manchester as the development team welcome the public’s thoughts and feedback on the current proposals to transform the current site into a thriving new urban neighbourhood and a key piece in the Northern Gateway development.

Proposals include the creation of c.1,200 homes; commercial units; a brand-new park located off Gould Street; new pedestrian and cycling routes through the site; and new landscaping throughout the scheme designed by Planit-IE.

Connection is very much at the heart of these landscape designs. Connection to the city, to nature and to the surrounding residential and commercial buildings are all evident and promoted throughout the scheme.

A challenging topography has been transformed to create a variety of dynamic and interesting routes throughout the site which can then spread to the wider area, developing a more robust relationship with the wider area – including the city centre, River Irk, and wider Northern Gateway masterplan. A new park is proposed adjacent to the railway arches to dramatically increas biodiversity levels and open more opportunities for connection to nature in the area, as well as providing much needed space for community events and outdoor activities. The surrounding buildings will be linked via ground floor connectivity, inviting commercial and residential tenants to influence and be influenced by the designs which surround them.

A strong focus on low carbon iniatives and green infrastructure is also evident throughout the scheme, reflecting Manchester City Council’s ambitions to become a zero-carbon city by 2038.

To gather feedback from local communities and stakeholders before a planning application is submitted later in 2020, Southvalley Estates Ltd have now launched the public consultation at gasworksnewtown.co.uk, where you can view masterplans, designs, and CGIs by Virtual Planit.

Nick Lake, asset manager at MCR Property Group, commented: “Our vision for this site has been a labour of love over the past few years. Our ambitious proposals for The Gasworks New Town realise the development potential of a key city centre location and the aspirations for the Northern Gateway. We have worked in close collaboration with Manchester City Council to bring forward a major transformative development that will create a new beating heart of a community in close proximity to the city centre. We look forward to finalising the formal planning application in line with public feedback.”
