Our Commitment to Uphold Human Rights

News
Design is never neutral. Every landscape we shape, every street we reimagine, and every story we tell about place carries consequences, for people, for ecosystems, and for the living systems that connect them. As landscape architects, urban designers, and visual storytellers we understand the weight of that responsibility. It directs our practice every day.

Manchester Regenerative Urban Design Studio Workshop

Our Regenerative Design Tool, composed of an ‘ecological ceiling’ and a ‘social foundation’, structures design decisions to meet the needs of all people within the means of the living planet. This is one of the means by which we actively uphold Human Rights; respecting, protecting, and fulfilling the basic freedoms and inherent dignities to which every single person, but it is only part of the picture.

We commit to respecting human rights; to actively avoid causing or contributing to negative human rights, throughout our practice and across our project work. This commitment is grounded in the International Bill of Human Rights; the ILO's Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work; the Paris Climate Agreement; the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework; and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals - the foundation from which we build.

As an accredited B Corp, Real Living Wage Employer, and Member of the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter, we hold ourselves to standards that go beyond compliance.

Strengthening Our Due Diligence

Our due diligence process is evolving as our understanding and the depth of our exploration increases. We are committed to continuously strengthening our ability to identify, address, and remediate negative impacts on human rights, as well as tracking and communicating our progress with honesty and accountability.

Our practice operations, policies, and ways of working are aligned with this commitment. We will raise awareness of human rights and planetary boundaries across our team, and communicate our commitment openly to our partners, clients, and stakeholders.

This work is overseen by Naomi Burl, Director of Operations and B Corp Lead, and Andy Roberts, who leads our Regenerative Practice and Practice Strategy.

If you have Human Rights concerns relating to our practice or project work, please raise using our Complaints Management Process.

Collective Responsibility in Practice

This work does not belong to Planit alone. We actively seek partnerships with purpose-driven practices, suppliers, public organisations, and experts who share our commitment to people, planet, and the living world. We work to maintain fair purchasing and contracting practices, creating the conditions for real living wages and living incomes throughout our value chains. By building relationships based on these shared values, we strengthen our own practice and contribute to a broader, industry-wide shift towards accountability and genuine care.
